We started by focusing on the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, which accounts for about half of the total energy consumption in the U.S… We helped utilities design and deliver customized energy efficiency programs for their C&I customers, offering services such as audits, rebates, retrofits, training, and technical assistance. We also developed expertise in demand response, which is the ability to reduce or shift electricity use during peak periods to help balance the grid and avoid blackouts.

Diversifying Our Portfolio and Capabilities

Over time, we realized that there was a need for more holistic and integrated energy solutions that could serve a wider range of customers and markets. That’s why we decided to expand our portfolio and capabilities by acquiring or partnering with other companies that shared our vision and values. Here are some of the key milestones in our expansion:

  • In 2010, we acquired GoodCents, a leader in demand response and smart grid solutions. GoodCents brought us advanced technology and experience in delivering residential and small business demand response programs, as well as smart metering, home energy management, and behavioral demand response.
  • In 2016, we acquired PlanetEcosystems, a software company that developed P-ECOSYS, a cloud-based platform that enables personalized customer engagement and optimization of energy programs. PlanetEcosystems enhanced our ability to offer innovative solutions such as online marketplaces, gamification, customer segmentation, and analytics.
  • In 2017, we acquired Build It Green, a non-profit organization that promotes healthy, energy-efficient, and sustainable homes in California. Build It Green expanded our presence and influence in the West Coast market, as well as our expertise in residential programs such as home performance, green building certification, quality assurance, and contractor training.
  • In 2018, we partnered with AM Conservation Group, a leading provider of energy and water conservation products and services. AM Conservation Group complemented our program delivery with their product sourcing, fulfillment, installation, education, and marketing capabilities. They also brought us Resource Action Programs, an award-winning provider of K-12 education programs that teach students and families about energy and water conservation.
