What is green technology?

Green technology refers to the use of technology to create or create environmentally friendly products or services. Green technology can help us reduce our impact on the environment, preserve natural resources and improve our quality of life. Crack

  • Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower and biomass can produce electricity without greenhouse gas emissions or air pollution.
  • Energy efficiency measures such as smart meters, LED lights and insulation can reduce the amount of energy we use or waste.
  • Electric vehicles such as cars, bicycles and buses can run on electricity instead of fossil fuels, reducing pollution and noise.
  • Smart grids, such as microgrids, demand response and energy storage, balance supply and demand and integrate renewable energy into the grid.
  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS), such as biochar, algae, and underground injection, can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or industrial processes and store it safely.

Green technology can help us create a cleaner, greener and more efficient energy system that meets our current and future needs.

How can we use green technology to transform energy?

We are using green tech to revolutionise the energy system in four main ways:

  • We provide green electricity to over 3 million homes and 25,000 businesses in the UK. Our electricity comes from renewable energy sources in the UK such as solar farms, wind turbines, water utilities and anaerobic digesters. We also offer green fees to combat carbon emissions or support reduction projects.
  • We are building our own green technology platform called Kraken. Kraken is a cloud-based, API-driven EnTech “bot” that we built from scratch to meet our customers’ needs. Kraken processes millions of user accounts and transactions quickly and accurately. It can also perform smart functions such as time-consuming electricity bills, point-to-point transfers and vehicle-to-grid integration. Kraken unlocks energy that works like the internet: the key to accelerating the world’s transition to distributed, 100% green energy.
  • We have licensed the Kraken platform to other energy companies around the world. We work with some of the biggest names in the industry, including E.ON, Origin Energy, Good Energy and Tokyo Gas, to help them transform their businesses with green technology. Our Kraken platform currently supports 17 million users worldwide, and our goal is to serve 100 million users by 2027.
  • We have invested in more than 300 renewable energy plants in Europe with a total capacity of over 2.8 GW. We also have the Net Zero Octopus Centre, our research center that helps governments and businesses get to zero faster.

With these four pillars, we use green technology to transform energy to make electricity cheaper, greener and better for people.

What we have done so far

We are proud of what we have achieved with our green technology vision. Some of our achievements include:

  • We have grown from a UK electronics retailer to a world market leader in just five years.
  • We have won many awards for our innovative technology and customer service, such as the company most active in promoting renewable energy in the UK (Renewable Energy Association 2019 and 2020) and the same company rating. Doctors recommend it four years in a row and have a 5-star TrustPilot rating from our customers.
  • We signed a $600 million investment agreement with Generation, Gore’s own sustainable investment, to support our global expansion and innovation.

What is our next goal?

We will not rest on our laurels. We are very concerned about the future of green technology and energy. Some of our goals are:

  • We want to serve 100 million customers worldwide by 2027, helping them save money and reduce their carbon footprint.
